Stucco is applied by hand which is why it is possible to give it different textures. Color can be added to the mixture or it can be painted over. If installed correctly, stucco has a long lifespan when maintained well. The disadvantage of using stucco is that it can be damaged quite easily and when that happens, the repair must be done correctly and professionally. Repairs must wait for appropriate weather as freezing temperatures or hot and dry weather can result in the stucco drying out too fast. The stucco application must be kept moist between the 3 coats and allowed to cure slowly and thoroughly.
Why Stucco Is Being Used to Enhance the Appearance of a Building
Stucco is a cement-based plaster that is made by mixing lime, sand, and cement. This mixture hardens into a durable material that is applied on the exterior and interior walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. The mixing happens on-site and a lath, or wire mesh, is used to help the stucco stick to the supporting structure. Generally, three thin coats are required to give the desired final effect. The slower the drying of the mixture, the stronger the stucco. Having no seams makes it water-resistant. It is also temperature proof, its insulation properties are good, it is glare resistant, and most importantly it is affordable, some of the reasons for its popularity.
The Process of Repairing Damaged Stucco
The common reasons for damaged stucco are mold due to water seepage, cracking due to water damage or poor workmanship. Stucco can be stained due to contaminants being deposited on it from rainwater or overflowing gutters. Home décor such as window boxes or lighting fixtures can also contribute to staining. The first step in a proper repair project is to break off the loose stucco without damaging the underlying lath. The loose edges must be chipped off until you reach the layer where stucco firmly adheres to the lath. The exposed lath is covered properly and a galvanized metal lath is placed. The final step is the application of the three coats of stucco once again. Painting is to be done only after proper curing for at least a week.
